INTRODUCTION TO GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON TRAVEL

For more than 85 years, our company has hosted travelers from all corners of the world. Through Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, also called GJ Travel, many have returned time and time again together with their families and friends, to experience Iceland’s unique, beautiful nature and historical traditions. Our dedicated team never lose sight of the ‘personal touch,’ and work hard to ensure that the varied and interesting itineraries offered by GJ Travel provide fully for the needs of today’s travelers.

A coach company

Our company was formed in 1929 when our founder Guðmundur Jónasson obtained his first driving license. Fascinated by the seldom explored interior, he ventured out to the highlands and even onto the glaciers, opening up a whole new world to the 20th-century traveler. Since his death in 1985, his family has continued to share his love and enthusiasm for Iceland, and are committed to introducing even more interesting tours and adventures for everyone to enjoy. We also own a fleet of modern, comfortable buses which range in size from 16 to 69 seats and in addition have a number of 4 wheel drive and high clearance buses which are specifically adapted for Highland travel. All our buses offer free Wi-Fi.

Scheduled escorted round trips and group tours

We offer scheduled tours, our highly experienced Group Planning Department can create itineraries to suit particular needs. These include specific ‘special interest’ tours for groups keen on photography, bird watching or geology – and for school trips, as well as organizing walking and natural history tours. They will arrange for all accommodation and transportation – which can include camping, farmhouse accommodation and/or hotels – and we always provide a specialist tour guide.

Explore Iceland and Greenland with GJ Travel

We are also experienced in organizing travel to Greenland. Trips to West-, South- or East Greenland can either be added to an existing or specially created Icelandic itinerary or treated as stand-alone destinations.

Whatever your needs – from just a city transfer to a complete package – the team at Guðmundur Jónasson look forward to helping to make your visit to Iceland really special.

GJ Travel Iceland welcomes you!

Goecco Eco Tours

Whether you go on one of our hikes, day-tours, or private tours we’ll show you the real Iceland: the serene, the thunderous, the quaint, and the surreal. Goecco is about experiencing Iceland off the beaten track on our down-to-earth tours, guided by real men and women.

As we are huge fans of the peaceful, beautiful Iceland we often follow the winding road to the places others don’t go. And when we do go the popular spots, we make an effort to be there during ‘quiet’ times. As we go along we throw in a bit of good music, local food and just enjoy real people talking to real people!

We are known for finding new places and inventing new tours. We don’t work with big corporations, agents or booking engines. We work with local people, finding new places to sleep, eat and experience Iceland.

We make an effort to work with likeminded people, who love and respect nature and other human beings. We don’t choose our guides from their guide school certificate but from their life experience and personality.

So if you want a big, fancy tour bus going from sterile photo opportunity to photo opportunity, we are not for you – but if you are looking for a road trip with good friends – come along with an open heart and a generous spirit!

To us at OK Adventure, it is important to preserve the nature we enjoy. We strive to minimize the negative effects tourism can have on the environment by encouraging our tourists to stay on marked footpaths, not to litter and preferably, refrain from smoking while on the tour.

Arctic Running offers trail running tours for people that like to exercise and enjoy nature at the same time. While you are on the go you get to explore the environment and our tours make sure that you enjoy the best of each season. We offer both day tours and longer overnight tours in Iceland. We also offer full service for participation in trail races in Iceland.

Arctic Running specializes in combining running and traveling for people who have done some running and want to experience what Iceland has to offer. Our guides are some of the most experienced runners in Iceland and frequently take part in trail running events and longer running tours. With our wide selection of running tours, from demanding or strenuous runs with 20 – 35 km / 13 – 21 mi per day to moderate runs with 5 – 10 km / 3 – 6 mi per day, all runners should find something that suits them for travelling around Iceland.

If you are planning a vacation in Iceland and want to experience the pure Icelandic nature and be able to exercise each day as well, then why not try one of our tours. Our guides will help you enjoy trail running in Iceland whilst exploring the environment and its beautiful nature.

We began by planning tours that we would go on ourselves where we could run as well. So we started using running as a way to travel and realized it’s probably the ideal way for all runners. So with our experience from the running, guiding, managing, tourism and travel industry we managed to design tours especially for runners. Keeping in mind that runners not only want to run but also enjoy spectacular natural surroundings and what it has to offer.

Local Guide Vatnajökull Glacier

Local guide is a small family run glacier guiding company that has been operating in South East Iceland since 1991. The company was founded by my grandfather Sigðurður Bjarnason but since 2015 myself and my partner Helen Maria have taken over a part of the company.

We are proud to maintain the excellent reputation of Local Guide and we pride ourselves on hiring local guides with an excellent knowledge of the area and the island as a whole and offering small group tours to enhance your experience.

Whilst the company was established in 1991, we are three generations of glacier guides and up to five generations of explorers in the area, one of the first men to climb the highest summit in Iceland Hvannadalshnúkur, on the 17th of August 1891 was my great grandfather Páll Jónsson.

In the summer months we offer hiking on the glacier with half day hikes, family tours and full day advanced tours for those with experience who want an adventure on the ice. During the winter months from October to March we offer ice caving tours.

Me and my father were the first people to offer regular ice cave tours in Iceland and we are continuing to offer this service, we strive to find the best available caves to offer the best experience possible for our guests.

As a small company we love the flexibility this gives us to be able offer private tours and to work on exciting projects for photography, film and print, we are always open to new possibilities so would welcome your inquiry.

We hope that you will enjoy your tour with local guide and we look forward to meeting you.

Glacier Guides Iceland

We offer trips into the Ice fall

Numerous outlet glaciers descend from the main glacier plateau of Vatnajökull, all unique in shape, form and accessibility. We offer amazing glacier hikes on the most beautiful one of the bunch, the Falljökull. The ice slowly crawls down from the Öræfajökull caldera (just under 1900m) and falls to about 300 m elevation giving our glacier the well suited name Falljökull which translates to „Falling Glacier“. Our Glacier Explorer, Glacier Grand Slam and Glacier Extreme trips give you a chance to stand or ice-climb inside the magnificent Icefall created by the moving ice.

We cater for a range of fitness abilities
Because of Falljökull´s gradient the front of the glacier is low angle and offers a great variety of glacial features as soon as you take your first steps on crampons. These include the infamous glacier mouse, crevasses, moulins and often smaller ice caves. On our longer hikes you get a chance to put your new crampon skills to the test as we move into the icefall for an exploration or an Ice-climb.

Our guides and staff
This one you will just have to experience yourself but we think they are the most humble, happy, eager to please and honest people we know. Most of them have been with us from the start and their knowledge of the area is uncanny at times which is a bonus for our guests. Please do not take our word for it- check out tripadvisor.com and see what others had to say.

Experience the retreat of the glacier first-hand
Making your way to the glacier from the parking lot, you will witness how much the glacier has retreated and see the evidence it has left in it´s path. The walk into the glacier takes on average 20 minutes and is a great part of the over all experience.

Amazing Views
On the walk in, weather permitting, you can see Iceland’s highest peak Hvannadalshjnúkur, along with Falljökull´s brother, Virkisjökull, falling from the high caldera. As we move up and look back you will see evidence of the glacial retreat along with the distant black sands, cut by glacier rivers, blending into the North Atlantic ocean providing a magnificent backdrop.

Glacier water
With clear glacial melt-water running on the glaciers surface in multiple streams you can take a sip and fill up your bottles with the best water Iceland has to offer before it makes it´s way to the murky glacier river and eventually to the ocean.

Sheep
Each spring the farmers let the sheep roam freely to make their way into the highlands, on our hikes it is an amazing sight to see them carefully make their way above vertical walls dropping into the valley in search of the perfect patch of grass.
