Glacier Lagoon

The Glacier lagoon in Iceland is close to highway number one, about 370 km (230 miles) east from Reykjavík and it is told to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. This lagoon is a recent one, the result of a warming climate. The surface is at sea level and sea water flows into the lagoon at high tide.

Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but it is up to 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. Breiðamerkurjökull is an outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier.

Touring Iceland

Touring Iceland is a tour operating company, specialising in guided minibus tours around Iceland. With both pre-packaged and tailor-made tours we can take you to all the major highlights in the south and west regions of Iceland. Just tell us what sights you are interested in and we will make it happen.

Our buses can accommodate up to 21 persons, however, we like to focus on smaller groups to be able to provide a personal and attentive service to each person on the tour, to answer questions and inform about the surroundings. It also ables them to be much more flexible than the bigger tour operators.

With years of experience in guiding and driving along with extensive knowledge about Iceland, we will help make your experience in Iceland an unforgettable one.

Mountain Guides Iceland

In 1994, a group of Icelanders with a passion for nature, adventure and environmental advocacy started an outdoor adventure company to take people from around the world on tours of a lifetime. As the originators of the Glacier Walk in Iceland, they revolutionized the outdoor adventure scene. Since the beginning, Icelandic Mountain Guides has been owned and operated by guides and we continue to set the standard in safety, mountaineering expertise, and environmental protection across the industry in Iceland.

We operate from our company headquarters in Reykjavík and our base camp in the beautiful Skaftafell National Park year round. Whether you want to go hiking, backpacking, trekking, ice climbing, on a glacier walk, mountain climbing, skiing, on an expedition or for a mountaineering course in Iceland or Greenland, we’ve got you covered! We provide one day and multi-day tours, for all activity levels, that highlight the rugged beauty of these countries. Join us on an unforgettable journey and see for yourself why everyone is raving about Iceland and Greenland.

Our Environmental Policy = Nature First
Icelandic tourism depends on the continued prosperity of our delicate nature. In all the activities and experiences we offer, our goal is to minimize the environmental impact and leave no trace when we travel. Our philosophy includes supporting local NGOs and taking an active part in discussing the development of wilderness and open spaces.

We offer exciting boat trips on the lagoon in one of our four amphibian boats. During the excursion you sail among the huge icebergs in the picturesque scenery of Jökulsárlón. We also offer Zodiac tours where we are able to cover large areas of the lagoon and get closer to the icebergs than on the amphibian. When possible the Zodiac goes almost all the way up to the glacier (as close as safe).
